How do you go from feeling stuck to fully stepping into your power? That’s the question Jodie Taylor helps us answer in this week’s episode of The First Gems. If you’ve ever felt like you’re capable of more but aren’t sure how to get there, this conversation is for you.

Jodie is a powerhouse—a DEI executive, content creator, and personal development coach who has mastered the art of transformation. She’s all about helping people build confidence, unlock their potential, and design a life that actually feels good. But her story didn’t start in boardrooms or on content creation sets. It started in a small, predominantly white town where she often felt like an outsider, yet it was this very experience that fueled her mission to share knowledge and uplift those who looked like her.

Listen to our full interview with Jodie on Apple Podcasts:

"Growing up in a homogeneous town, I didn’t see people who looked like me in positions of power or success. Information felt so siloed—there were opportunities out there, but they weren’t being shared with people like us."

That realization stuck with her, and as she grew in her career, she made it her mission to bridge that gap. Now, through her platform, she’s dedicated to helping others access the insights, strategies, and mindset shifts that changed her life.

How Her Jamaican Roots & Upbringing Shaped Her Mission

Being raised in a Jamaican household came with high expectations—education, hard work, and success were non-negotiable. But navigating those values in a town where she felt different from her peers wasn’t always easy.

"In Caribbean culture, there’s this idea that you have to work twice as hard to be taken seriously. That was ingrained in me from a young age. But I also realized that hard work alone isn’t enough—you have to be strategic about how you show up."

Jodie’s experience of feeling “othered” in her early years made her hyper-aware of the gaps in access and knowledge that often exist for people of color. Instead of accepting it, she decided to change it. Now, she uses her platform to equip others with the confidence, tools, and strategies they need to succeed—whether in corporate spaces, creative industries, or entrepreneurial ventures.

Leveling Up Starts From Within

We often think of a glow-up as something external—new job, new look, new lifestyle. But according to Jodie, the real transformation starts from the inside.

"Your self-concept is everything. You can’t expect the world to see you differently if you still see yourself the same way."

She broke down how shifting the way she saw herself completely changed the opportunities that came her way. Instead of waiting for external validation, she started embodying the confidence, skills, and energy of the person she wanted to be.

For anyone feeling stuck, this is the reminder you need: your next level isn’t about luck—it’s about alignment.

Balancing Corporate Life & Creative Passions

Jodie isn’t just talking about success—she’s living it. As someone who navigates both the corporate and creative worlds, she knows what it takes to balance structured career paths with passion projects.

"I used to think I had to choose between my corporate career and my creative side. But once I realized they could complement each other, everything changed."

She shared how she leverages her 9-to-5 experience to elevate her personal brand, while also allowing her creative work to fuel her confidence in the workplace. Instead of seeing them as competing priorities, she found ways to merge the two—proving that you can have the best of both worlds.

Manifestation & Owning Your ‘Zone of Genius’

One of the most powerful moments in our conversation was when Jodie broke down the importance of manifestation—not just as a buzzword, but as a tool for designing the life you want.

"Manifestation isn’t just about thinking positive thoughts. It’s about taking action, showing up, and believing that what you want is already yours."

She also talked about finding your "zone of genius"—that unique space where your skills, passions, and purpose align. When you tap into that, things start to flow differently. Opportunities that once felt out of reach start coming your way, and you no longer have to force success—it starts meeting you where you are.

The Gem: Confidence is Your Superpower

We always end our episodes with a gem, and Jodie’s takeaway was loud and clear:

Confidence is your superpower.

"The way you see yourself sets the tone for everything. If you want the glow-up, you have to believe you deserve it."

Whether you’re working toward a career move, building your brand, or just trying to step into your best self, confidence is the key that unlocks it all. And the best part? It’s something you build, not something you’re just born with.
